Acne - What is it?

Many people all over the world, teenagers and adults alike, deal with acne and the results of the condition. In order to properly treat acne, one must first understand what acne is and how it works. Acne is actually the blockages of the pores or follicles that occur when there is an over production of sebum and the pores get blocked and bacteria begins to grow in the pore. There are two different types of acne and they are non-inflammatory acne and inflammatory acne.

Non-Inflammatory Acne
One type of acne is non-inflammatory acne, and this type of acne is the least serious type of acne. This type of acne can include both whiteheads and blackheads, and these blemishes are not inflamed. A whitehead occurs when bacteria and sebum that are trapped end up staying below the skin. A whitehead appears like a very small white spot, or it may not even show up to the naked eye at all. Blackheads are another type of non-inflammatory acne and these types of blemishes occur when the trapped bacteria and sebum and somewhat open to the surface of the skin. These spots end up turning black because of the various reactions with the air, the sun, and the pigmentation of the skin. Blackheads generally last for quite some time and are not easy to get rid of.

Inflammatory Acne
The other type of acne is inflammatory acne, and this is a bit more serious than non-inflammatory acne, since there is inflammation. Papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts are all types of inflammatory acne. Papules occur when the follicle wall actually breaks, and pustules occur when white blood cells come to the surface of the skin, and this is what we generally call a pimple. If a follicle totally collapses, it can sometimes lead to the development of a nodule, which is usually red and quite sensitive to the touch. In severe cases, cysts may even occur that are filled with pus, and these can be painful and may even lead to scarring.

While acne is not a life threatening disease, it can result in scarring and can also have psychological effects on those that suffer from it. Almost all teenagers deal with acne at some point during their teenage years, and some of them do end up requiring medical treatment to deal with acne that is very severe. While acne primarily affects the face, it does occur elsewhere as well and is known to also affect the back, neck, arms, legs, shoulders, and chest. Thankfully, for those who suffer from acne, there are more and more treatments available that can help alleviate acne, although it usually takes time for acne to totally go away. Newer treatments include over the counter medications that include benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, resorcinol, and sulfur, antibiotics prescribed by physicians, or the drug Accutane.

Control Acne Blemish

Acne blemish control is very important for people suffering from acne. Acne is particularly a common problem for teenagers and, unfortunately, can get worse before it gets better. Teenagers who suffer from acne can struggle with low self-esteem and poor self-image. Many adults are also plagued with acne blemishes and while they may be able to emotionally handle the experience better than many teenagers, their self-image also suffers.
