Having Clear Skin:
Helpful Hints to Control Acne

Although acne is a rather common problem among teenagers, and even for some adults, that's certainly no consolation for those affected by it. Having clear skin can be an important and often frustrating goal, especially to younger people who may already be struggling with low self-esteem or any of the other issues that teenagers must deal with.

But having clear skin doesn't have to be an effort in futility. There are many products and treatments available to choose from today. The key is finding the right skin care regimen for you and your particular condition. Here are some helpful hints on what to do and also, what not to do for having clear skin and controlling your acne.

First, let's explore some of the things we should be sure to avoid in our quest for having clear skin.

You Shouldn’t: Use these products
Rubbing alcohol, astringents, masks, skin toners and even some hair care products can all irritate already sensitive skin that is acne-prone. And never scrub or rub the skin on your face, gently wash with a light touch and rinse with lukewarm water, never hot.

You Shouldn't: Overuse treatments or medications
Although it may seem like a good idea to slather on the creams or cleansers to speed up the process, doing so may actually have the adverse effect. Acne will never clear up magically or overnight, no matter how badly we may want it to. It normally takes a month or so to start seeing results after regular use of acne medication, and may take up to a half a year or more before seeing signs of significant improvement.

You Shouldn't: Excessively clean or wash the face
This is yet another instance where less is more. Washing your face gently just a few times a day is essential for having clear skin that is healthy. Many people make the mistake of scrubbing or washing their face over and over again thinking if they rid the skin of the oils that seem to be clogging their pores, they'll get rid of the acne sooner. Sadly, the opposite is true.

And now let's discover the things we should be doing for having clear skin and for controlling outbreaks of acne and blemishes.

You Should: Wear sunscreen and moisturizer
Sunscreen should be used faithfully anytime you are going outdoors, regardless of the weather or time of year, and not only for the purpose of controlling acne either. Harmful rays from the sun not only cause our skin to prematurely age but can cause skin cancer as well. And non-comedogenic moisturizers and make-up will not clog your pores and are the best choice for people with acne.

You Should: Always follow recommended doses and treatment amounts
Many clinical tests and studies have been conducted regarding the effective treatment of acne medications and their recommended dosages. Overuse can actually cause the medication to not work as well as it is intended and may even cause unwanted side-effects. See our Review of two of the most popular acne products -Exposed Acne Treatment and Proactiv solution Acne Treatment here.

You Should: Shampoo daily and shave with care
Shampooing oily hair on a regular basis, especially long hair, can help decrease acne outbreaks caused from the excess oil near our faces. As for shaving, be sure the skin is thoroughly wet with warm water and a razor with a sharp blade is used to minimize the risk of nicks and cuts which can irritate the skin further. And, lastly, NEVER try to shave the acne itself to remove it; this will only make it many times worse and harder to treat.
